Accounting and Baking together is not a easy job.  Madhuri had always a niche towards creativity and this landed her in baking.

Today we have the capable cake artist Madhuri. In this interview session with Annie’s Blog the young founder of Swirl Arts tells us about her exciting journey.

  1. Hi Madhuri, Welcome to the interview session of Annie’s Blog. To start with, we would request you to tell us a few lines about yourself.
    Hello It is  Madhuri from Guwahati, Assam. I am 25 yrs old and currently working as an accountant. My love towards doing something creative have lured me into the baking world where i find cake as a blank canvass and cream sugar paste to be my colors.

2.    How did you get started with baking? At what age did you bake your first cake?
My interest towards baking world was not at all planned. It was like nature call. I  was searching some sample pics in google for my friends birthday and then I  came across such beauties. Plus home bakers who are active online played a major role whose amazing creations has inspired me so much that at last I tried my hands on. I was 23 when i baked my first cake.

3. How was your first baking experience?
I still remember how I messed up with my first cake.My friend assisted me during baking session but we ended up converting the silky cake batter into burnt cake crust. In one word my first baking session was disaster. Whenever I think of that day I  still do not believe today how baking has become a lovable part of my life.

4. How did you learn baking?
I learnt many things via you tube. I used to follow Rajshri and Huma in the kitchen when I started baking. However I attended one day class to clear about basic things but as one cannot learn anything in a day I again switched to you tube tutorials to further improve myself.

5. When did you decide to become a professional baker and start your baking business What was the inspiration behind the decision?
It was my friends who insisted me to go for commercial.Just for the sake of my promotion they used to arrange birthday gathering and used to take sample cake pieces in their offices.And the day when I posted my first customized thali cake in Facebook people went crazy which doubled my confidence. It motivated me so much that I took my first step towards professional baking. In short my friends motivation plus as I stated above creative home bakers have served as inspiration behind baking.

6. Please tell us about your baking company Swirl Arts?
Swirl Arts is 8 months old which I operate via Facebook. I activated my page in April. In fact choosing particularly this name of my page also popped in my mind while baking. I was trying my first rosette design by swirling cream over the cake and since I  find designing cakes as a kind of art so what can be better name than this Swirl Arts.

7. What are some of the challenging cake ideas that you performed till date?

If I have to choose I would say creating a theme design over a small cake which includes many elements becomes challenging specifically when you deal in whipped cream. Among st such cake a doctor theme and a sleeping man in bed are the few ones I found challenging as the client was particular regarding the look.

8. What are some of the signature products of your company? Which one is your personal favorite?

I specialize in custom made cakes and cupcakes where I deal in fondant made figurines for which order has to be place one week ahead.Chocolate rum and chocolate coffee is a hit among st clients.My favorite is a beach theme cake baked for a lady for her anniversary.

9. Being a baker, you must have had to overcome challenges. Please tell us about them.
Since I work to manage my baking raw material expenses. It becomes challenging for me to manage time and complete the order after my office hours. There has been sleepless nights where I keep on working over my cakes till morning and freshen up to rush for my office. In order to overcome this now I have limited my number of orders and have fixed time gap ahead of which clients are asked to place their orders.

10. Narrate some of your success stories.
Being few months old the success I achieved are my satisfied clients. I feel so overwhelmed when they review my page with their positive feedback and share their experiences while having my cakes. It serves as a booster to me.

11. What plans do you have to scale your business operations?
I really want to do something with logistics. I feel delivering cakes at the doorstep might add extra towards demand of the cakes as it will become convenient for those who stay far away from my place.

12. Your advice to those who wish to take up baking as a profession?
If you love to do something then patience and practice can make you pro. All one need to do is to dream and achieve it.

13. If you have had one wish.
I wish to further improvise my skills.I so wanted to learn under a professional baker and call myself a total pro in baking world.

The Story of Box of Bakes Ketki Karani who chose baking over a corporate career!

Ketki Karani is a trained cake artist.  She loves food and always has the niche towards baking and cooking. She never liked working for corporate and enjoyed baking. She also completed her diploma course of baking and confectionery at Sophia Polytechnic Institute.

1. Hi Ketki , welcome to the interview session of Annie’s Blog. To start with, we would request you to tell us a few lines about yourself.

My name is Ketki Karani. I am a home baker and I love food. I love to eat too and cook and bake as well. Since childhood I was always inclined towards cooking and eating the best food because it runs in my blood. “Simplicity is the best beauty.” I do believe in this quote a lot and try to implement it in my style of baking. Simple but delicious in every bite.

2. How did you get started with baking? At what age did you bake your first cake?
I just asked myself one question, “What is that makes me happy”? The answer was
food. I love cooking and I love desserts as well. After that there was no looking back. I enrolled myself in some baking classes to experience the feeling of baking and fell in love with baking instantly. I baked my first cake at the age of 23.

3.  How was your first baking experience?

It was a moment of pride for me on seeing the my first cake I had baked as well as my first bread loaf. It was an amazing feeling.

4.How did you learn baking?

I did a 1 year diploma course of baking and confectionery at Sophia Polytechnic institute.

5. When did you decide to become a professional baker and start your baking business?What was the inspiration behind the decision?

When I realized that no matter in which MN C’s or firms I work, being a B.Com
graduate, and getting a good pay, I was not happy nor satisfied by doing a 9-5 job.
But in the baking profession, Inspite of working 12-14 hours, a decent pay (less
than MNC’S), There is immense happiness and satisfaction and I get to bring a smile on people’s face through baking. That’s when I knew this is what I want to be and do for the rest of my life. I wouldn’t​ really say inspiration, but more of feeling content in this line of profession and it makes me very happy.

6.Please tell us about your baking company Box of Bakes.

Box Of Bakes is a home bakery where we make,innovate and create fresh and
delicious goodies like brownies, sweet and savory tarts, macaroons and a lot more.

7.What are some of the challenging cake ideas that you performed till date?

Recently, I had to make a jungle theme cake for a 2 yr old’s birthday. Since I do not make fondant cakes, it was a little challenging to create a jungle looking theme. Create animals, trees and certain other elements that took a lot of thinking. But I love challenges and managed to pull it off. My client and their 2 yr old daughter was very happy.

8.What are some of the signature products of your company? Which one is your personal favorite?

Belgium dark chocolate and walnut brownie is our signature product. My personal favorite is the baked orange cheesecake.

9.Being a baker, you must have had to overcome challenges. Please tell us about them.

Finding the right and  quality ingredients is the biggest challenge. Not all  economically​ priced ingredients are of bad quality, but not all priced ingredients are of good quality. Quality ingredients make a great quality product. Another challenge is quality awareness which still in India people lack, considering most people are price sensitive and prefer price over quality.

10. Narrate some of your success stories.

I would like to share one of my success stories which is really close to my heart. I
had made an eggfree hazelnut mousse cake for a couple’s anniversary. When the
cake was cut to celebrate, it got over like in 1 minute. The entire cake board was
empty. Not even a crumb of the cake was there. The cake board was totally clean
in 1 minute. Everyone was just around the cake till they finished it. Everyone was
just praising the taste, the moistness and every single compliment I got was amazing. I was very happy.

11. Your advice to those who wish to take up baking as a profession.

Just believe in yourself, be focused and be positive. Embrace failure,never give up,
no matter how many times you fail at a certain recipe or creating a perfect product, try till you succeed. And most importantly, love your work. Work with a loving attitude and an open mind to learn new things.

12.If you have had one wish.
My one wish would be that I should be able to eat and try new desserts I create
without getting fat.
